Report: Mercury Management in Tunisia
Resources description
Prepared by Saïd Tlig under the GEF-funded CHILD 1.1 project in cooperation with UNEP/MAP–MedProgramme partners and Tunisian stakeholders, in December 2024 report assesses mercury management across Tunisia using 2022 national data. It examines the country’s institutional and regulatory framework, identifies major sources of mercury, estimates releases to air, water and soil, and evaluates environmental and health risks at industrial, mining and coastal hotspots. The assessment was undertaken to support Tunisia’s prospective ratification and implementation of the Minamata Convention and strengthen national mercury controls. Using the UNEP Mercury Toolkit, literature reviews, official statistics, stakeholder consultations and site-specific evidence, it estimates annual releases of approximately 7.24 tonnes and recommends stronger legislation, monitoring, institutional coordination, waste management and public awareness.
