Regional Training: “Mediterranean Coastal Adaptation: Catalysing Nature-based Solutions and Adaptation Finance”, 9-11 April 2024, Hilton Podgorica Crna Gora, Montenegro
The workshop will build on the results and achievements of the MedProgramme Child Project 2.1 (CP 2.1) and SCCF Projects, as well as other relevant inputs from the MedProgramme’s Child Projects, with specific reference to the CP 2.1 and SCCF pilots areas: the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro and the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Morocco.
In line with the GEF MedProgramme SCCF Project’s objective to “assist countries to increase the resilience of the Mediterranean marine and coastal areas to the impacts of climate change”, this regional training will zoom in on two different aspects of adaptation:
1) The first half of the training will build the capacity of participants on Nature-based Solutions for adaptation. Using a holistic landscape approach, it will provide participants with an overview of the different types of NbS and Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approaches available, according to a
range of typical Mediterranean coastal areas and ecosystems, based on the main climate risks the Mediterranean region is faced with. The workshop will also introduce participants to different methodologies, tools and guidelines for proper NbS design, planning and implementation, address the topic of financing such solutions, and involve the participants in practical activities to help them use the information and tools that will be shared with them during the workshop.
2) the second half of the training will focus on coastal adaptation finance, convening International Financial Institutions, banking, insurance, private sectors in low-lying coastal areas to zoom in on adaptation financing possibilities for the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro and broader opportunities and lessons learned concerning the institutional support needed for the enhanced use of coastal climate risk assessments and cost-benefit analyses to support investment decisions in Mediterranean coastal zones.
