Technical Guidelines for Inventorying Mercury-Containing Medical Devices in Lebanon’s Public Hospitals
Resources description
Prepared by Ramboll for MedWaves on 30 December 2022 under GEF MedProgramme Child Project 1.1, this report provides technical guidance for Lebanese local expert Nathalie Karam to inventory mercury-containing medical devices in participating public hospitals across Lebanon. It aims to generate reliable data to support the collection and replacement of mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers, estimate mercury-contaminated waste and treatment costs, and advance compliance with the Minamata Convention. The inventory is conducted through a structured questionnaire covering device use and stocks, mercury-free alternatives, procurement requirements, waste-management procedures and replacement plans. The collected data are recorded in a standardised spreadsheet and processed using reference estimates of mercury content for each device type to calculate the quantity of elemental mercury requiring safe management.
