This International Waters Experience Note presents lessons from Child Project 1.1 of the Mediterranean Sea Programme (MedProgramme) on the management of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and mercury wastes across eight Mediterranean countries. It documents experience with hazardous waste disposal, Basel Convention procedures, institutional strengthening, regulatory support, environmental monitoring, contractor management and regional cooperation. The note highlights practical lessons on adaptive project delivery, national ownership, transboundary waste movements, risk management and the use of specialised implementation partners, with relevance for future Global Environment Facility (GEF) chemicals and waste interventions.
