Across the Mediterranean, women are playing an increasingly important role in protecting coastal ecosystems and shaping sustainable futures for their communities. Through the UNEP/MAP-GEF MedProgramme, the Gender Strategy supports women’s leadership across key environmental areas including biodiversity, chemicals and waste, climate change and international waters.

This video highlights the voices and experiences of women working on the front lines of environmental action. From marine scientists in Libya strengthening the management of Marine Protected Areas, to civil society leaders in Lebanon empowering women farmers and coastal communities, their work demonstrates how inclusive participation leads to stronger and more effective solutions.

By promoting gender-responsive planning, collecting gender-disaggregated data and ensuring women’s participation in decision-making, the MedProgramme is helping bridge the gap between local knowledge and policy action.

Because sustainable coastal management depends not only on investments and technology, but above all on people.
